New FEMP Data Center Documents Available

Evaluating Liquid versus Air Cooling in the Maui High Performance Computing Center:This case study evaluates the energy efficiency of new, liquid-cooled computing system applied in a retrofit project compared to the previously used air-cooled system. The study found that the water cooling will save $200,000 per year in operating costs for the 300kW Maui High Performance Computing Center.

General Recommendations for a Federal Data Center Energy Management Dashboard Display:This document explains the benefits of developing dashboards to track energy use in Federal data centers and discusses typical dashboard content that is useful for energy management. Dashboards, visual displays of key metrics, help to track energy use, inform decisions for taking corrective action and can be used to track the performance of energy-efficiency improvements once they have been implemented.

FEMP Announces New Utilities Offering UESCs

FEMP is pleased to announce that the following utilities are now offering utility energy service contracts (UESCs) to their federal customers:

  • Dominion Virginia Power
  • Duke Energy
  • Piedmont Natural Gas
  • CPS Energy

A UESC is a contracting vehicle that allows utilities to provide federal customers with comprehensive energy and water efficiency improvements and demand reduction services. Current Presidential mandates require agencies to evaluate facilities, identify potential savings and appropriately leverage both private and public sector funding to invest in comprehensive projects. UESCs provide a streamlined approach for federal agencies to contract for the broad spectrum of energy management services offered by local utilities. Partnering with your local serving utility is vital for agencies to meet their energy goals.

FEMP maintains a utility partner list on the UESC website which includes current contact information for utilities offering UESCs and/or participating in the Federal Utility Partnership Working Group. Agencies are encouraged to contact their local serving utility for the latest information on UESCs, rebates and incentive programs and other services that can help facilities fund energy projects. If your federal facility is interested in pursuing a UESC and your local serving utility is not listed, please contact David McAndrew, FEMP's Utility Program Lead. Utilities not listed are also encouraged to reach out to FEMP. Free training is available to assist you in getting a UESC program started.

FEMP's Technical Assistance Portal is Now Live!

FEMP is excited to announce the launch of the FEMP Technical Assistance Portal. The Portal will allow federal agencies to submit and track requests for assistance meeting their renewable energy and energy efficiency related goals. During the first phase, portal assistance is geared toward renewable energy projects. Other project types will be included in later phases.

Agencies can use the Portal to submit requests for assistance with the planning and implementation phases of projects and track the status of their requests throughout the process. The Portal enables FEMP to better monitor technical assistance requests from federal agencies, while providing information on training and opportunities for financial assistance.

Be sure to sign up for the informational webinar scheduled for today at 2:00 p.m. The webinar will provide more information on what the Portal does, and who should use it and will include a live demonstration.

Click here to go to the Technical Assistance Portal and direct any Portal related questions to Patrick.Shipp@ee.doe.gov.
