Aug. 22, 2014 TP14-17 Upcoming 2014 Product Calendar — The Census Bureau has posted anticipated release dates for each regular and recurring statistical product expected to be released in 2014. The products are listed in the Census Bureau's online product calendar, which will be updated as needed throughout the year. American Community Survey Public Assistance Receipt: 2000 to 2012 — This 2012 American Community Survey brief on the number and percentages of households receiving public assistance provides statistics for the nation, states and the 25 metro areas with the largest populations. Public assistance includes Temporary Assistance to Needy Families and General Assistance. Although similar briefs have been published each of the last several years, this is the first that provides comparisons back to 2000 and for metro areas. (Tentatively scheduled for release Sept. 2.) American Community Survey: 2013 — Data collected in 2013 from the nation's most comprehensive survey provide statistics on more than 40 demographic, social, economic and housing topics. Some of the topics covered include income, poverty, health insurance, educational attainment, the commute to work, the foreign-born population, language spoken at home, ancestry, occupation, number of vehicles available and housing costs. These statistics will be available for the nation, all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, every congressional district and all counties, places and metropolitan areas with populations of 65,000 or more. In addition to the statistics available from the American FactFinder data tool, a set of analytical briefs with American Community Survey statistics will be available on income and poverty. The annual American Community Survey gives communities the current information they need to plan investments and services. The news release will be embargoed for subscribers on Sept. 16 for public release on Sept. 18. Demographic School Enrollment in the United States: 2013 — The Census Bureau's annual, national-level statistics on the characteristics of students, from nursery school to graduate school. The data were collected by the October School Enrollment Supplement to the 2013 Current Population Survey. The tables provide information by age, sex, race, Hispanic origin, family income, type of college, employment status, nativity, foreign-born parentage, attendance status (full or part time), control of school (public or private) and vocational course enrollment. (Tentatively scheduled for release Sept. 9.) Income and Poverty in the United States: 2013 — On Sept. 16, the Census Bureau will announce findings from its annual official report on income and poverty for the nation based on the Annual Social and Economic Supplement to the 2014 Current Population Survey. The report will include statistics pertaining to the 2013 calendar year and will also compare trends over time. Additional information regarding the time and format of the release will be included in a separate announcement closer to the release date. Health Insurance in the United States: 2013 — On Sept. 16, the Census Bureau will announce its annual findings on health insurance coverage. The report will include national-level statistics from the Social and Economic Supplement to the Current Population Survey for calendar year 2013 and a few tables showing trends and state-level coverage between 2008 and 2013 from the American Community Survey. Additional information regarding the time and format of the release will be included in a separate announcement closer to the release date. 2008-2012 American Community Survey County-to-County Migration Flow Products — New tables and updates to the Census Flows Mapper show how many U.S. residents during the course of a year moved from one county to another. They will include data tables that present such information by work status, employment status and occupation. Also included is a working paper analyzing findings. (Scheduled for release September.) The Foreign-Born Population from Africa: 2008-2012 — This American Community Survey brief — the Census Bureau's first focusing on the African foreign-born — highlights the size, growth, geographic distribution and educational attainment of the African foreign-born population in the United States. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.) Coresident Grandparents and Their Grandchildren: 2012 — This report uses data from the 2010 Census, the American Community Survey, the Current Population Survey and the Survey of Income and Program Participation. The report, for the first time, compares coresident grandparents to grandparents who do not live with their grandchildren. In addition, the report examines the historical changes in coresidence of grandparents and characteristics of grandparents who live with their grandchildren. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.) Recent Population Trends for the U.S. Island Areas: 2000 to 2010 — This report examines demographic trends for American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The report will provide information for each area on history, government and census geography. (Tentatively scheduled for release in September.) Economic 2012 Economic Census Industry Series: Additional data on the Arts, Entertainment, and Recreation; Manufacturing; Retail Trade; Transportation and Warehousing; and Wholesale Trade sectors — Included in a series of national-level data files on these sectors of the U.S. economy, which will include new statistics on a variety of industries including software publishers and motor vehicle and parts dealers. The files provide data on the number of establishments, sales, payroll, number of employees, value of product line sales and other data items by industry. (Tentatively scheduled for release Aug. 30.) 2013 Annual Survey of Public Pensions: State-Administered Defined Benefit Data — Provides a comprehensive look at the financial activity of the nation's state-administered defined benefit pension systems, including cash and investment holdings, receipts, payments, pension obligations and membership information. Statistics are shown at the national level and for individual states. (Tentatively scheduled for release in August.) 2012 Economic Census Industry Series — Continuing on a flow basis through February 2015, this series contains national-level statistics from the twice-a-decade economic census for specific industries on the number of employees and establishments, payroll and total revenues. It also includes detailed statistics on the product lines sold or services provided by businesses. Training Opportunities Census Bureau Offers Training Opportunities — Webinars are available to help the public access and use Census Bureau statistics. These free sessions, lasting about 60 to 90 minutes, show how to use census databases and mapping tools and to find demographic and economic statistics at a local or national level. Recently Released (Released since Aug. 8, 2014) Census Bureau Names Peter Glynn to Scientific Advisory Committee — Aug. 19 — The U.S. Census Bureau announced that Peter W. Glynn, chairman of the Department of Management Science and Engineering at Stanford University, has accepted an invitation to serve on the Census Scientific Advisory Committee. His term started Aug. 21. Demographic Distribution of Household Wealth in the U.S.: 2000 to 2011 — Aug. 21 — Table package and research brief showing household net worth by quintile and various characteristics of the householder, such as age, race and Hispanic origin and education. Each quintile represents one-fifth of households. Statistics come from the Distribution of Household Net Worth and Debt in the U.S. table packages (for 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009, 2010 and 2011). The release includes tables on the median value of debt and the percent holding debt for households by various characteristics of the householder for 2000, 2002, 2004, 2005, 2009 and 2010. They complement similar tables for 2011 released last year. These national-level statistics come from the Survey of Income and Program Participation. Specifically, the tables present statistics on average monthly income, participation in government-sponsored social welfare or social insurance programs, and labor force activity during each period. Happy 100th Anniversary Panama Canal! — Aug. 15 — The Census Bureau's Anna Owens, a native Panamanian, writes that the Panama Canal is still a vital part of the global trade community 100 years after it opened on Aug. 15, 1914. Recent Findings on Trends in U.S. Entrepreneurship — Aug. 14 — The Census Bureau's Ron Jarmin writes that the rates of new firm start-ups have been declining since the early 1980s. Even though this trend is not of great concern, young entrepreneurial businesses are an important source of job creation in the U.S. economy. The churn of firms in the economy and the associated reallocation of resources are critical components of productivity growth. Introducing Census PoP Quiz, the Census Bureau's Latest Mobile App — Aug. 12 — Census Bureau Director John Thompson announces that the Census Bureau's newest app is now available. Understanding Geographic Relationships: American Indian Areas — Aug. 7 — The Census Bureau's Katy Rossiter explains that federal American Indian areas and off-reservation trust lands often cross state and county lines.
