ED just announced the availability of $75 million for two new Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) competitions. Check out the Homeroom Blog for a personal story about how GEAR UP has helped students maximize success.

A candid conversation: Secretary Arne Duncan spoke with activist Kris Perry at the U.S. Department of Education headquarters on Thursday, June 5. Perry was vaulted into the national spotlight as the lead plaintiff for the Proposition 8 case, which challenged California's 2008 measure to ban same-sex marriage. She has also been a long-time advocate for early childhood education. During her talk with Duncan, she discussed her experiences with the Proposition 8 trial, plus being a wife, mother, and advocate for children.
