Last week, Treasury hosted the Global Women in Finance Symposium, bringing together women in leadership roles across the public and private sectors to discuss important economic issues.  This year's symposium included an impressive roster of panelists, moderators, and keynote speakers who participated in a dialogue on ways to increase global prosperity through investment and innovation in the economic recovery.

In his opening remarks, Secretary Jacob J. Lew focused on efforts to bolster global growth, emphasizing the importance of promoting job creation, raising living standards, and improving economic security worldwide.

"If we want to make global growth more inclusive, we are going to have to tackle worldwide poverty.  And one of the surest ways to combat global poverty is to increase women's economic participation," said Secretary Lew during the opening remarks at the event. "… The only way a country can realize the full potential of its economy is with the full participation of its entire population.  So this is not a woman's issue; it is an economic one."

In the closing remarks, Deputy Secretary Raskin reflected on topics covered during the event and highlighted the importance of global growth.  Notably, she announced that she will be taking her first international trip as Deputy Secretary to Africa this month where she will lead the U.S. delegation at the 2014 Annual Meeting of the African Development Bank in Kigali, Rwanda.

"Nowhere is the confluence of global trends likely to have a more profound impact than in Africa," Deputy Secretary Raskin said.  "… I look forward to visiting Africa and hearing from Africans – government officials, business leaders, and private citizens – about how we can work together to tackle our collective challenges."
